The White River Valley Players present The Singing Master on October 26, 27, & 28 and November 2 & 3 at the Rochester High School Auditorium. The Singing Master is an original production inspired by the life and music of early American composer Jeremiah Ingalls, who was also the first choirmaster of the First Congregational Church in Rochester. The play contains a number of Ingalls’ compositions, plus music by contemporary Vermont composer, Dorothy Robson, who is the present choirmaster of Ingalls’ church.

Jeremiah Ingalls was a well-respected itinerant music teacher and composer of what has come to be known as shape-note singing --  vigorous, sacred choral music sung today by groups all over the world. He published a book of his compositions, “Christian Harmony”, in 1805, when he was the choirmaster of the First Church in Newbury, Vermont.

In 1810, Ingalls was excommunicated from that church and he retreated, with his wife and family, to Hancock, Vermont, then a rustic, frontier town. There he withheld that he had been excommunicated in order to accept the position of choirmaster in Rochester. The play’s story, interpreted by playwright Dick Robson, explores Jeremiah’s fall from grace, what happens when his sins come back to haunt him, and where his redemption, if attainable, may be found. (More info about Jeremiah and the playwright's research here: Jeremiah Ingalls: Fact, Anecdote, and Invention.)

Directed by Ethan Bowen, the cast of The Singing Master is made up of a score of local actors and musicians, starring Steve Augustus and Jeff Tolbert as the older and younger Jeremiah Ingalls and Janine Reeves as his wife and the story’s narrator, Polly.
